GENESIS – Official Teaser

This is some pre-alpha footage from our project named Genesis. It is a first person survival sandbox game being developed on Unreal Engine 4.

Genesis will be a place to explore searching for the next big thing while trying to stay alive and safe, a place for creativity and playfulness,
you can take the role of an aggressive solo player and ferociously hunt down animals and other players or you can hide in the mountains and set up a farming community with your friends.
We hope this appeals to your taste as much as it does to us.

Optimizations!

Hello everyone. I’m the lead programmer on this project, and I have decided to make a quick announcement about where we are in development, as I am sure that many of you have questions about progress.

Currently, we are building this game on Unreal Engine 4. When we first started, the engine was very new and some of the features with the engine were very buggy. As the engine has progressed, so has our knowledge of it. Not only have bugs and features been fixed and added, but we have also learned more about the engine.

What does this have to do with the current project? Well, you may have noticed a few comments from me about game optimization. For us, we feel that this is insanely important on this project. Sure, it’s easy to make something look decent, but will that game be playable? As we began to play, we noticed that we were having a few issues with memory and decided to begin working through them.

This led to the discovery of a couple bugs (very large ones unfortunately) that required a large rewrite of the coding, as well as changing a bit of the art workflow. On the surface, it may not seem like much progress has been made, but performance wise, we have had extremely large gains. We have been optimizing large areas of the map (and artwork) to allow for a stable 60fps on mid-grade gaming computers. Obviously, we don’t always see those frame rates, but it is a goal that we are aiming for currently.

We have also rewritten a large portion of code to better handle the memory with assets in our game. While I do not have the exact gains yet (my coding isn’t all complete!), I do know that currently, the memory looks like it will end up being around 1/2 to 1/3 the amount that we were originally using. On top of this, we have also been optimizing the AI, lighting, and map to allow for expansion and better performance.

While I regret that we don’t have a video for you this weekend, we are already in the process of creating one to show off some of the changes that we have made. Please understand that even though this game is on steam concepts, we still are trying to make it the best playable experience that we can currently. First of all, let us apologise for the silence.

We have been planning Genesis Marketing path, so we can bring you the most recent content, news and obviously to make Genesis available as soon as we can.
